“May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:5-6, ESV

Prayer is at the very foundation of our country. Today, we acknowledge and celebrate this foundation with the National Day of Prayer.

The official National Day of Prayer verse is technically only Romans 15:6. Yet I believe verse 5 also carries an important message for us this day – a reminder that we serve a God of encouragement and endurance.

I know for many when they consider our culture, it is easy to be disheartened and concerned for our future. But these verses tell us to take heart and stand together in one community for the glory of God.

Take time to pray for our nation today. Pray for our leaders at all levels of government. Pray for peace throughout the world. Pray for those who do not know the Lord, and ask that they come to know his saving grace. Pray for leaders who will endure and be encouraged. For leaders who will fear God, not man.

Yet also remember to give thanks with a joyful heart for God’s love, abundant blessings, and unceasing mercy.
