NATIONAL SCHOOL CHOICE AWARENESS FOUNDATION: 60% of U.S. Parents Searched for New Schools Last Year

A recent survey by the National School Choice Awareness Foundation reveals a significant shift in how parents approach their children’s education. The census-balanced study of 2,873 parents found that 60% considered new schools for their children in 2024, highlighting the growing demand for educational options nationwide.

The Foundation’s vice president, Shelby Doyle, reports:

“Parent demand for K–12 education options remained strong in 2024. With 60% of moms and dads saying they considered new or different schools for at least one of their kids, it is safe to say that school choice is ‘here to stay.'”

This trend underscores why maintaining and expanding Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs) and School Tuition Organizations (STOs) is so important. These programs provide a path for families who seek educational freedom and choices that best fit their child’s needs.

Doyle did point out one notable challenge:

“Even though parents told us that they considered private or faith-based schools more than any other type of school last year… the percentage of parents who enrolled their children in private-sector schools after considering them remains relatively low. This may be due to the cost of attendance for families, even with the expansion of private school choice programs such as education savings accounts and ESAs.”

While this was a nationwide survey, this finding reinforces why Arizona must protect its school choice programs. Interest in alternative education options continues to grow, and financial barriers remain significant obstacles for many families. Arizona’s ESA program and STOs help bridge this gap.
