Governor Signs HB 2161, Safeguards Parental Rights

A Statement from Center for Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod, Esq.

The right of parents to raise their children without undue interference from government is so fundamental that threats to it inspire fierce defense from parents across ideological lines. Governor Ducey’s signature on HB 2161 appreciates this right of parents and recognizes the limits of schools in the upbringing of children.

Representative Steve Kaiser’s bill affirms the rights of parents already in Arizona law, clarifies those rights, and provides a way to hold schools and healthcare providers accountable for violating those rights.

HB 2161 would not have been necessary had school and healthcare officials consistently respected the role of parents and abided by current law acknowledging a parent’s right to direct the education and wellbeing of their children.

The new law will protect children from activist school officials and foster healthy family relationships. For these reasons, Arizona can be grateful for lawmakers and a Governor willing to recognize their limits, as well as a parent’s authority.

Please call Governor Ducey and thank him for affirming parental rights. Call his office at 602-542-4331.
