Parental Rights Not Protected in Canada

A troubling story out of Canada reminds us why it is so important to have strong parental rights provisions in the law. In late January, the school board of the Hamilton-Wentworth in Ontario informed their teachers that students are not permitted to be excused from classes that promote homosexuality.

Mark Cripps, a journalist in Ontario recently obtained a school document that was distributed to the teachers. Cripps noted that the handout "basically indicate parents have no rights when it comes to their child's education."

CAP believes that the law should specifically protect parents in how they direct the upbringing and education of their child. Yesterday, an important parental rights bill, SB 1309, passed through the Senate Public Safety Committee. Part of this bill would ensure that parents must choose to "opt-in" their children to any sexually-related education. CAP is working with legislators to protect parental rights and pass this important bill.
