Adoption Bill Passes House!
Today in the Arizona House of Representatives, HB 2148 passed with a bipartisan 35-22 vote. HB 2148 is one of the main bills on CAP's 2010 Legislative Agenda and is the first CAP-supported bill to pass through the House.
This legislation would set forth public policy that supports the importance of marriage and having married parents raise children. If the bill becomes law, married couples would be given a preference to adopt children that are in the foster care system. The bill has many exceptions that would allow single adults to adopt children. Above all, the child's best interests will still be considered the top priority when deciding where a child should be placed. CAP thanks Rep. Warde Nichols, the bill's sponsor, for his defense of the bill on the House floor this afternoon.
The bill will now be sent to the Senate.
