Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice to Retire

On Monday afternoon, Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor announced her plans to retire in June of this year.  Justice McGregor has served on the Arizona Supreme Court since 1998, and has been Chief Justice since June of 2005.

How will Justice McGregor’s spot be replaced on the state Supreme Court?  First, those interested in serving submit a lengthy application to the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments.  The Commission then selects a number of those applicants for interviews.  Next, the Commission nominates at least three qualified candidates for the Supreme Court.  Governor Brewer will then select which candidate will become an Arizona Supreme Court Justice.  Current Vice Chief Justice Rebecca White Berch will take over the Chief Justice role once McGregor officially retires.
