A Chance at Life With Passage of SB 1367

A Statement from Center for Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod

Babies who survive abortions could get a chance at life, thanks to Arizona lawmakers. The House passed SB 1367 today and the Senate gave final passage, sending the life-saving bill to Governor Ducey.

Babies, like Aryana, have survived abortions only to be left to die without care. Aryana survived an abortion at 22 weeks and lived on her own for an hour and 18 minutes. Without basic, humane medical care, little Aryana struggled to breathe and slowly slipped away.

Sponsored by Sen. Steve Smith, SB 1367 will put an end to that kind of inhumane treatment by ensuring doctors are prepared to do everything they can to save the new life.

A new video further conveys the urgent need for this bill. The video released this morning by The Center for Medical Progress reveals the cavalier attitude some abortion doctors have toward current law. In the video, Arizona abortion doctor DeShawn Taylor is caught discussing how she avoids current Arizona law requiring her to provide care for a baby that survives an abortion. Taylor says, ‘The key is you have to pay attention to who’s in the room because the law states you are not supposed to do any maneuvers after the fact to try to cause fetal demise.’

SB 1367 clarifies and strengthens Arizona law so that doctors like Taylor can’t get away with letting the baby die.

I applaud the House and the Senate for their work to protect the most vulnerable among us.
